• Should I buy a pre-assembled or unassembled hive? Unassembled hives save on shipping costs and offer a fun DIY project. Pre-assembled, pre-waxed hives save time and ensure structural perfection right out of the box. 
• Does the wooden hive need to be painted? Yes, unpainted wood must be painted with exterior-grade, non-toxic paint or treated with a natural wax coating to prevent rotting from weather exposure. Leave the inside of the hive completely unpainted.
• What type of wood is best? Cedar offers natural rot and pest resistance but is more expensive. Pine and Fir are highly durable, cost-effective options, especially when properly sealed or dipped in beeswax. 

Management & Use

• Why start with a 10-frame hive instead of an 8-frame hive? A 10-frame hive offers more stability against high winds, provides more room for honey storage, and matches standard commercial dimensions, making it easier to find compatible accessories. 
• When should I add the second layer (super)? Only add the second box when the bees have fully drawn out the comb and occupied roughly 7 to 8 of the 10 frames in the first box. Adding it too early makes the hive hard for the colony to defend and heat. 
• Do I need a queen excluder between the layers? Use a queen excluder if you want to keep the upper layer strictly filled with clean honey. Remove it if you want to give the queen maximum space to expand her brood nest.

• What is the difference between frames and foundations? The frame is the wooden outer rectangle. The foundation is the textured plastic or wax sheet inserted inside the frame that guides bees to build straight, uniform comb. 
• Should I use wax-coated plastic foundation or pure wax foundation? Plastic foundations coated in real beeswax are highly durable, do not warp in extractor machines, and are easier for beginners to handle than fragile pure wax sheets.
