Population-based planning

Start with people, then size the response

For early procurement planning, enter the population to estimate household water demand, basic storage equivalents and household water containers. These figures are a planning baseline only. Final pump, tank, treatment and distribution design must follow a site assessment.

Planning benchmark used 15 L/person/day for drinking, cooking and household hygiene 2 water containers/household, each 10 to 20L 1 water point per 250 people as a distribution planning reference Source: Sphere humanitarian WASH guidance. Local conditions may require higher volumes.
15,000 Lwater required per day
45,000 Lwater for selected storage buffer
95,000L tank equivalents if fully stored
40010 to 20L household water containers
4water-point planning reference
Small village250 people

3,750 L/day. About 12,500 L for a 3-day buffer. Approx. 3 x 5,000L tank equivalents, 100 household containers at 5 people/household, and at least 1 water-point planning unit.

Large village / ward cluster1,000 people

15,000 L/day. 45,000 L for 3 days. Approx. 9 x 5,000L tank equivalents, 400 household containers, and 4 water-point planning units.

LLG programme5,000 people

75,000 L/day. 225,000 L for 3 days. Approx. 45 x 5,000L tank equivalents, 2,000 household containers, and 20 water-point planning units.

District priority zone10,000 people

150,000 L/day. 450,000 L for 3 days. Approx. 90 x 5,000L tank equivalents, 4,000 household containers, and 40 water-point planning units.

A

Water source & movement

Identify bore, river, spring, dam or existing tank source first. Then select pump size, suction hose and discharge hose from actual lift, distance and required flow.

B

Storage & household access

Use fixed or collapsible tanks for buffer storage and household jerry cans for collection. Tank quantity depends on refill frequency, not population alone.

C

Protect food production

Prioritise shade cloth, controlled watering, seed packs, planting equipment and crop inputs around functioning water access.

D

Remote-service continuity

Add solar lighting, inverter power, tarpaulins, water filters or cold storage where schools, clinics and field teams require them.

PNG scale context: The National Statistical Office reports a total population of 10,185,363. The calculator is intentionally designed for local project populations because El Nino impacts, water sources and access constraints differ widely between provinces, districts, LLGs and communities. Why prepare now

Drought planning is already a national priority

PNG agencies and humanitarian partners are preparing for 2026-2027 El Nino agricultural drought risk.

Government and FAO material highlights risks to water availability, food production and rural livelihoods, and places emphasis on early preparedness, water access, irrigation, agriculture inputs and practical community response measures.

Procurement questions

Planning a drought-response purchase?

Common questions from institutional and project buyers.

Can Chemica quote complete El Nino project packages?

Yes. Chemica can combine pumps, hose, tanks, water containers, shade cloth, garden equipment, seeds, fertiliser, tarpaulins and selected power products into an itemised quotation based on the project scope and available supply.

Do you supply DDAs and provincial projects?

Chemica can provide commercial quotations to eligible institutional purchasers, including DDAs and provincial organisations, subject to their own procurement rules, approvals and funding conditions.

Can NGOs request quotations for remote locations?

Yes. Provide the final delivery point and access details so freight, handling and practical supply options can be considered during quotation preparation.

Are all listed products always in stock?

No. Stock levels and incoming shipments change. Chemica will confirm current availability, alternatives and lead times at quotation stage.

Can Chemica help choose the correct pump and hose size?

Yes, but the project should provide the intended water source, approximate lift or head, distance, required flow and delivery setup so the equipment can be matched more appropriately.

Project note: El Nino impacts vary by location. Product selection should reflect local technical assessment, water source conditions, agricultural requirements, approved project scope and the purchaser's procurement rules. Chemica's quotation is a commercial supply proposal and does not determine funding eligibility.
